Summer Fun at the Lake
Early Summer 2010
Smith Mountain Lake Tourism Information
Summer is a great time to enjoy the outdoors at the lake. Boating, fishing, golf, swimming, and watching the sunset are just a few of your choices each day at glorious Smith Mountain Lake.
The lake’s only public beach is at Smith Mountain Lake State Park, where you can frolic in the second-largest body of freshwater in the state of Virginia and bask in the sun on 500 feet of warm, sandy beach. Camping, cabin rentals, and hiking are available there as well.
While you’re in the area, plan to take in the two nearby national monuments, the D-Day Memorial and Booker T. Washington National Monument, just 35 minutes apart on central Rt. 122. At Booker T. Washington National Monument on June 19, enjoy the Juneteenth Celebration, an emancipation celebration, with a focus on freedom. Tour the Burroughs Plantation and enjoy live entertainment by local gospel groups.
Independence Day is always a treat at the lake, with fireworks and festivities, featuring food, crafts, antique vehicles, and much more. This year’s celebration is Saturday, July 3.
