Elderhostel—Life-Long Learning, Adventure, & Fun

Spring 2007

There's no better time to be retired and enjoying good health and new-found freedom—freedom to travel and try new things. Do you know about Elderhostel? It's a non-profit organization, offering meaningful and fun short-term (one or two week) study programs around the world. Choose among more than a dozen Elderhostel programs offered right here in the Shenandoah Valley this year! If you'd like to explore history, look into Friends, Neighbors, Presidents: The World of Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe. It's offered in Charlottesville in April, May, and June. Or check out the Virginia Sampler: Exploring Blue Ridge Mountain Historical Sites, offered in April in the Bedford area.

Learn how to use that new digital camera at Adventures in Pictures: Digital Photography in Virginia's Blue Ridge Mountains, also a Bedford area course.

Perhaps music is a 'growing edge' for you. Enroll in Dulcimer Discoveries in Abingdon or a Shape Note Singing School at Smith Mountain Lake.

Are you the outdoorsy type? Then a Greenbrier Valley Adventure in May might be just right for you, or perhaps you’d prefer a week of Whitewater Rafting in the New River Gorge in July. It is a Grandparent-Grandchild Adventure Elderhostel.

Maybe you'd just like to see some new territory. How about Rails, Trails, and Terrestrials of the West Virginia Highlands, offered in August—you'll ride the Cass Scenic Railroad, visit the National Radio Astronomy Observatory and wander the trails of Snowshoe Mountain Resort.
