Dayton Tourism Information
Horses' hooves echo down country roads in Dayton. No big trucks rushing through, no loud honking from impatient motorists here! A peaceful respite away from the big city, Dayton is the perfect place to be.
Your first stop has to be Dayton Farmers Market, conveniently located right off Rt. 42. Start with the food. From Hank's Smokehouse to Warfel's Sweet Shoppe, you can have lunch and dessert, all homemade right here. Once you have eaten your fill, walk off those calories by checking out the rest of the market. Every nook and cranny is packed with locally-made products, like stained glass, metalworks, woodworks, paintings, photographs, home décor, toys, and flags.
Next, stop at Silver Lake Mill, situated on a beautiful lake, the ideal setting for photos. Be sure to check out the gift shop inside the mill, now home to LDA Creationsknown for its china and glassware decorations, sold at many of the best museums and resorts across the nation. Tour the historic mill, burned by Union Gen. George Custer during the Civil War.
Learn more area history at the Harrisonburg-Rockingham Historical Society. Spend some time browsing the collections, especially the electronic map, highlighting the Valley Campaign of 1862.
